FORMULA SHELF
1 of 370
The arithmetic behind the work: what to measure, what to type in, and what the answer comes out as. Every formula says what the symbols mean and gives a worked example, so you can check it against a job you have already done.
Quick calculators. A calculator appears where the formula is a single,
clean equation with clear symbols. It is a convenience, not an authority:
double-check every result yourself, especially doses, loads, torque and
safety-critical settings.

Electrical power
MOST USED
P = V x I = I2 x R = V2 / R
SYMBOLS · P = power (W); the other two forms are handy when you know the resistance or the voltage instead of the current
UNITS · watts (W), kilowatts (kW)
HOW TO USE
For working out what a heater, a motor or a charger really uses. 1 hp is about 746 W, so a 1.5 kW heater is 2 hp of heat going into the room.
EXAMPLE
A 2,300 W kettle on 230 V draws 10 A.
