FORMULA SHELF 28 of 370

The arithmetic behind the work: what to measure, what to type in, and what the answer comes out as. Every formula says what the symbols mean and gives a worked example, so you can check it against a job you have already done.

Quick calculators. A calculator appears where the formula is a single, clean equation with clear symbols. It is a convenience, not an authority: double-check every result yourself, especially doses, loads, torque and safety-critical settings.

Measurement 1 formulas

Volume of a cone
V = (1/3) x pi x r2 x h
SYMBOLS · V = volume; r = radius; h = perpendicular height
UNITS · m3, litres
HOW TO USE

Grain heaps, fertiliser heaps, sand and gravel cones, and conical feed piles. A third of the cylinder of the same base and height.

EXAMPLE

A 3 m radius, 2 m high heap of grain = 18.85 m3 = 18,850 kg at 750 kg/m3.

QUICK CALCULATOR V = result
Enter values above.

Convenience only. Double-check the result against the worked example or a second method before you use it.

Kitchen 4 formulas

Nixtamal for maize tortillas
maize to lime water: 1 kg of maize per litre of water with 15-20 g of lime, soaked 12-16 hours
SYMBOLS · the nixtamal is the ground maize, and it goes stale quickly, so make it the same day
UNITS · ratio
HOW TO USE

Lime makes the maize release its niacin, which is the whole point of treating it. See Flint Corn And Popcorn.

EXAMPLE

1 kg of maize and 1 L of water with 15 g of lime makes about 1.1 kg of nixtamal.

nixtamal maize tortilla lime niacin
Rice water ratio and absorption
white rice 1:1.5 by weight, brown rice 1:2, and pulao 1:1.75 ; after cooking the rice weighs 2.5 to 3 times the dry weight
SYMBOLS · the ratio is by weight of dry rice to water, not by volume
UNITS · ratio by weight
HOW TO USE

Weigh the rice and the water and the result is the same every time. Salt the water, and let it rest before you cook it.

EXAMPLE

500 g of rice with 750 ml of water makes about 1.6 kg of cooked rice.

rice water ratio cooking absorption
Scaling a recipe up or down
new weight = old weight x (target yield / current yield)
SYMBOLS · work out the factor from the yield, not from the number of people, and scale the seasoning by the same factor
UNITS · factor
HOW TO USE

The quickest kitchen arithmetic. Divide by the factor for a smaller batch, and remember that a double batch does not cook in double the time.

EXAMPLE

A recipe for 6 with 300 g of flour, baked for 25 minutes: for 4, multiply by 0.67, so 200 g of flour and about 20 minutes.

scaling recipe yield batch cooking
Yoghurt, kefir and cultured milk
1 L of milk makes about 1 kg of yoghurt ; use 2 tablespoons of starter per litre and keep it at 40-45 C for 6-12 hours
SYMBOLS · the same weight in and out, with the water evaporating or being drawn off as whey
UNITS · kg, hours
HOW TO USE

Warm the milk to 45 C, cool to 40 C, add the starter and keep it warm. See Yoghurt And Kefir.

EXAMPLE

5 L of milk at 45 C with 100 ml of starter, kept at 45 C for 8 hours, gives about 5 kg of yoghurt.

yoghurt kefir starter milk ferment

Money 1 formulas

Gross margin and markup MOST USED
margin % = ((price - cost) / price) x 100 ; markup % = ((price - cost) / cost) x 100
SYMBOLS · price = what you charge; cost = what it cost you
UNITS · %
HOW TO USE

Margin is measured against the selling price, markup against the cost. They are not the same number and confusing them is how people lose money. A 50% markup is a 33% margin.

EXAMPLE

Bought at 2 and sold at 3: a 50% markup, a 33% margin.

QUICK CALCULATOR margin % = result
Enter values above.

Convenience only. Double-check the result against the worked example or a second method before you use it.

Growing 2 formulas

Isolation distance for saving seed
isolation = the distance needed to stop pollen from another variety reaching the flower
SYMBOLS · maize 300 m, brassicas 800 m-1 km, onions 400 m, peas 10 m, squash 400 m, lettuce 300 m
UNITS · m
HOW TO USE

Only worth it if you grow one variety at a time, or if the neighbours are not growing the same crop. Otherwise you will save a hybrid.

EXAMPLE

Saving brassica seed on a smallholding usually needs an agreement with the neighbours.

seed saving isolation pollen variety allotment
Plants per square metre
plants per m2 = 1 / (row spacing in m x plant spacing in m)
SYMBOLS · use the same spacing figures the seed packet gives
UNITS · plants/m2
HOW TO USE

The quickest way to plan a bed or a border. Onions at 10 cm square give 100 a square metre; potatoes at 30 cm give 11.

EXAMPLE

Carrots at 5 cm in 15 cm rows: 1 / (0.15 x 0.05) = 133 a square metre.

plants spacing bed onions carrots

Workshop 3 formulas

Pilot hole for a screw
pilot hole (mm) = screw thread diameter (mm) x 0.75
SYMBOLS · for a screw into softwood use 0.7, into hardwood 0.6, into metal 0.7, into masonry a masonry bit of the same diameter as the anchor
UNITS · mm
HOW TO USE

The right pilot hole lets the screw pull the two parts together instead of just splitting the timber.

EXAMPLE

A 6.5 mm screw wants a 5 mm pilot in softwood.

screw pilot wood drill splitting
Pulley and belt speed ratio
driven rpm = driving rpm x (driving pulley diameter / driven pulley diameter)
SYMBOLS · the belt takes up the difference; the belt speed is the same at both pulleys
UNITS · rpm
HOW TO USE

The belt and pulley rules for a lathe, a compressor or a sander. A small pulley on a shaft with a big one on the belt gives speed and torque.

EXAMPLE

A 100 rpm motor on a 100 mm pulley driving a 400 mm pulley: 100 x (100/400) = 25 rpm.

pulley belt speed ratio lathe motor
Wire tension and strainer travel
tension force (N) = tension in the wire (N/m) x span; a hand strainer gives about 1,500-2,500 N on a 2.5 mm wire
SYMBOLS · a strained wire hums; if it thuds it is loose, if it sings it is about right
UNITS · N
HOW TO USE

Strain each wire to the same tension, lowest wire first, and keep the strainer run at the same place on every wire. See Fencing Wire And Straining.

EXAMPLE

A 100 m fence with a strainer run 200 mm gives 1/500 of stretch in the wire.

wire tension strainer fence straining

Construction 1 formulas

Thermal bridges and damp
a cold bridge shows up as a line of mould or a damp patch at the same place every winter
SYMBOLS · common bridges: the slab edge, the window reveal, the lintel, a pipe going through a wall
UNITS · diagnostic
HOW TO USE

Mould on the same corner every winter is not bad luck. Look for the cold spot with a thermal camera or the back of your hand.

EXAMPLE

Damp at the base of a cold wall is condensation, not a leak, unless it moves when it rains.

damp condensation mould bridge wall

Energy 1 formulas

Transformer ratio
Vs / Vp = Ns / Np
SYMBOLS · V = voltage; N = number of turns; p = primary, s = secondary
UNITS · dimensionless
HOW TO USE

For a welder, a battery charger, a lamp on a long lead, and any step-down or step-up. Power is roughly conserved, so a step-up gives you less current for the same watts.

EXAMPLE

Stepping 230 V down to 24 V gives about ten times the current for the same power.

transformer voltage turns welder charger

Physics 7 formulas

Gear ratio MOST USED
ratio = teeth on driven gear / teeth on driving gear ; speed out = speed in / ratio ; torque out = torque in x ratio
SYMBOLS · ratio = driven teeth / driving teeth; speed out = speed in / ratio; torque out = torque in x ratio
UNITS · dimensionless
HOW TO USE

For a gearbox, a quad final drive, a mower gearbox or a winch. A 3:1 reduction triples the torque and drops the speed to a third. The power stays the same, less the losses.

EXAMPLE

A 12-tooth pinion driving a 36-tooth gear is 3:1.

gear ratio box torque speed
Momentum and impulse
p = m x v ; impulse J = F x t = change in momentum
SYMBOLS · p = momentum (kg m/s); F = force (N); t = time (s)
UNITS · kg m/s; N s
HOW TO USE

Why a soft bag of sand and a hard block hit differently at the same speed, and why you roll with a fall. Doubling the speed doubles the momentum and quadruples the stopping force.

EXAMPLE

A 2 kg tool at 5 m/s has 10 kg m/s of momentum.

QUICK CALCULATOR p = result
Enter values above.

Convenience only. Double-check the result against the worked example or a second method before you use it.

momentum impulse collision safety
Newton's second law
F = m x a
SYMBOLS · F = force (N); m = mass (kg); a = acceleration (m/s2)
UNITS · newtons (N)
HOW TO USE

The force needed to move a mass. The tractor pulling a trailer, the ramp lifting a load, a horse pulling a plough. Double the mass and you double the force, for the same acceleration.

EXAMPLE

A 1,500 kg trailer accelerating at 1 m/s2 needs 1,500 N.

QUICK CALCULATOR F = result
Enter values above.

Convenience only. Double-check the result against the worked example or a second method before you use it.

force mass acceleration newton tractor
Pascal's principle and hydraulic rams
P is the same everywhere, so F1 / A1 = F2 / A2
SYMBOLS · A1 = small piston area; A2 = large piston area; F1, F2 = the forces on them
UNITS · N
HOW TO USE

The jack, the brake press, the loader bucket and the post hole rammers. A 10 cm piston moved with 100 N will lift 1,000 kg on a 1 m piston.

EXAMPLE

A 100 N push on a 10 cm2 piston lifts 1,000 kg on a 1,000 cm2 piston.

hydraulic jack brake press ram loader
Power
P = W / t (or P = F x v)
SYMBOLS · P = power (W); W = work (J); t = time (s); v = speed (m/s)
UNITS · watts (W), kilowatts (kW), horsepower (hp)
HOW TO USE

How fast work gets done. 1 hp = 746 W, so a 50 hp engine is 37 kW. A machine doing the same work in half the time has twice the power.

EXAMPLE

37 kW (50 hp) = 74,000 W.

QUICK CALCULATOR P = result
Enter values above.

Convenience only. Double-check the result against the worked example or a second method before you use it.

power watts horsepower engine work
Stress, strain and Young's modulus
stress sigma = F / A ; strain epsilon = dL / L ; E = sigma / epsilon
SYMBOLS · E = Young's modulus, a material constant (steel about 200 GPa, oak about 11 GPa, concrete about 30 GPa)
UNITS · Pa
HOW TO USE

The stiffness of a material. Steel is nearly twenty times stiffer than oak, which is why a steel frame sags less and lasts longer than a timber one of the same size.

EXAMPLE

A 10 mm steel bar pulled by 5 kN across 78.5 mm2 = 64 MPa.

QUICK CALCULATOR stress sigma = result
Enter values above.

Convenience only. Double-check the result against the worked example or a second method before you use it.

stress strain youngs modulus materials steel
Weight and mass
W = m x g (g = 9.81 m/s2 on earth)
SYMBOLS · W = weight (N); m = mass (kg); g = gravitational acceleration
UNITS · N
HOW TO USE

Mass is how much there is, weight is how hard it presses. A sack of fertiliser has the same mass everywhere and a different weight on the moon. Lifting power is usually quoted in kilograms, which is really a mass in disguise.

EXAMPLE

A 200 kg sack weighs about 1,962 N.

QUICK CALCULATOR W = result
Enter values above.

Convenience only. Double-check the result against the worked example or a second method before you use it.

weight mass gravity lifting

Chemistry 1 formulas

Avogadro's law
V is proportional to n at constant temperature and pressure
SYMBOLS · equal volumes of gas at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules
UNITS · varies
HOW TO USE

The rule that lets you scale up a gas reaction - a bottle of gas and a cylinder of gas behave the same way.

EXAMPLE

Double the moles in a fixed vessel and you double the pressure.

gas avogadro moles volume

Data 1 formulas

Standard deviation MOST USED
sigma = square root of ( sum of (x - mean)2 / n )
SYMBOLS · x = each reading; mean = the average; n = number of readings
UNITS · same as the readings
HOW TO USE

How spread out a set of readings is. A 500 litre herd with a standard deviation of 20 is steady; one with 120 is not. It is how you tell a genuinely consistent flock from a lucky average.

EXAMPLE

Readings 98, 100, 102, 100 give a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of about 1.6.

deviation variation statistics records

Statistics 4 formulas

95% confidence interval
CI = mean +/- 1.96 x SE
SYMBOLS · SE = standard error
UNITS · same as mean
HOW TO USE

The range the true average is likely to lie in. Use 2.58 for 99%.

EXAMPLE

Mean 50 and SE 2 gives 46.1 to 53.9.

confidence interval statistics
Coefficient of variation
CV = standard deviation / mean x 100
SYMBOLS · Use the same units
UNITS · %
HOW TO USE

Comparing variability between groups with different averages, such as two flocks.

EXAMPLE

SD 2 kg on a 40 kg mean is 5% CV.

SYMBOLS · n = window size
UNITS · same as data
HOW TO USE

Smoothing noisy daily readings such as milk, rainfall or prices.

EXAMPLE

A 7-day average smooths the weekly milk curve.

average moving trend
Standard error of the mean
SE = s / sqrt(n)
SYMBOLS · s = standard deviation; n = sample size

HOW TO USE

How precisely a sample mean estimates the true mean. More samples, smaller error.

EXAMPLE

SD 10 with 25 samples gives SE 2.

QUICK CALCULATOR SE = result
Enter values above.

Convenience only. Double-check the result against the worked example or a second method before you use it.

HOW TO USE

How long before a machine, shed or solar array pays for itself. Ignore interest for a quick check.

EXAMPLE

A 6000 machine saving 1500 a year pays back in 4 years.

payback investment finance

Electrical 1 formulas

Power factor
PF = real power / apparent power
SYMBOLS · kW / kVA
UNITS · 0 to 1
HOW TO USE

A low power factor means more current for the same useful work. It matters for pumps and motors.

EXAMPLE

8 kW from 10 kVA is a power factor of 0.8.
